Urban Engines

Urban Engines was a Los Altos, California-based data analytics startup founded in 2014 that used big data and spatial analytics to improve urban mobility and help people, cities, and companies make better decisions about transportation. The company developed a novel 'Space/Time Engine' database that mapped objects in motion, enabling real-time insights into how people and vehicles move through cities. Urban Engines had partnerships with transit agencies in Washington D.C., Sao Paulo, and Singapore, as well as delivery and logistics companies. The company was co-founded by Shiva Shivakumar (former VP Engineering at Google) and Balaji Prabhakar (Stanford professor), and raised funding from Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock, SV Angel, and Samsung Ventures. Urban Engines was acquired by Google in September 2016.
