Universal Quantum

Universal Quantum is a UK-based quantum computing company founded in 2018 by Professors Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger from the University of Sussex. The company is building utility-scale trapped-ion quantum computers, following an engineering-based roadmap to create devices that are reliable and scalable enough for real-world applications. In 2017, the co-founders published the first practical blueprint for a large-scale trapped-ion quantum computer, and incorporated Universal Quantum the following year to turn that blueprint into reality. The company has reached major technical milestones including connecting quantum modules at near-perfect fidelity with its UQConnect technology. Universal Quantum operates a centre of innovative excellence in the UK with additional sites in Germany and the USA, and is producing next-generation quantum devices for clients including the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). Its mission is to empower humanity to solve the most complex computational challenges in drug design, climate modelling, and battery chemistry.
