United Dwelling was a Los Angeles-based proptech startup that designed, built, and managed prefabricated accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in homeowners' backyards and garages as a turnkey affordable housing solution. The company handled everything from design and permitting to construction and tenant placement, offering homeowners an income-sharing model with no upfront costs and net-zero energy ADU units developed in partnership with architecture firm Modative. Backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Alpha Edison with $10 million raised, United Dwelling targeted over 831,000 eligible properties across the Los Angeles basin before ceasing operations around 2022 amid scaling and economic challenges.
