About

The Open Network (TON) is a decentralized, layer-1 proof-of-stake blockchain originally developed by Telegram co-founder Nikolai Durov beginning in January 2018. Telegram raised $1.7 billion across two private SAFT rounds to fund development of the Telegram Open Network, but abandoned the project in 2020 following an SEC enforcement action. The network was subsequently revived and developed by an independent community under the TON Foundation, a non-profit incorporated in Zug, Switzerland in 2023. In September 2023, Telegram selected TON as its official Web3 infrastructure partner, integrating a TON-based wallet into the Telegram app. TON supports ultra-fast transactions, low fees, and native apps, and is designed to onboard billions of users through its deep Telegram integration. The network's native cryptocurrency was originally called Gram and relaunched as Toncoin before reverting to the Gram name in June 2026. TON's codebase is open-source and maintained at github.com/ton-blockchain.
