TaxxWiz, now rebranded as SmartWiz, is a Birmingham, Alabama-based fintech startup that builds AI-enabled tax preparation software for tax professionals and CPAs. Founded in 2021 (with roots going back to 2018 when Auburn University students began building tax software in a basement), the company developed Wizzy — an AI-powered browser extension and platform that automates the transfer of client documents into U.S. and state personal income tax forms. SmartWiz is one of only 16 IRS-approved tax software platforms. In 2023, the company received a $150,000 Google for Startups Black Founders Fund prize. By 2025, SmartWiz announced plans to add 66 high-paying jobs in Birmingham and expanded its headquarters at Birmingham's Innovation Depot.
