TapFun

TapFun is a Tokyo-based cloud gaming platform that enables users to play high-quality smartphone and PC games instantly through a web browser, with no downloads or installations required. Founded in September 2020 by CEO Kenichi Katagishi, the platform addresses key pain points in mobile gaming: high device storage and hardware requirements, slow download times, and excessive app store fees. TapFun uses cloud rendering and browser-based access to stream games in real time, and charges a platform fee of 18% of gross sales (including cloud costs) — significantly lower than the 30–40% levied by competing app stores. Game publishers can integrate TapFun by embedding the TapFun API into existing EXE/APK files, enabling browser delivery without a full rebuild. The company received investment from Cygames Capital in September 2023 and a Series A from Rakuten. It plans to expand to console game titles and subscription models, and to enter app store markets in Japan and internationally, starting with English-speaking markets in North America and Europe.
