SunFunder

SunFunder (now operating as Mirova SunFunder following a 2022 merger with Mirova) is a mission-driven climate finance business headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, focused on debt financing for off-grid and distributed solar energy companies serving emerging markets — primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2012, SunFunder was the first mover in addressing the debt financing bottleneck faced by off-grid solar companies in developing countries, pioneering impact investment vehicles that channel institutional and retail capital into clean energy access for underserved populations. The platform finances solar companies that deploy solar energy solutions for homes, businesses, and communities that are not connected to traditional electricity grids. In June 2022, SunFunder merged with Mirova, the responsible investment subsidiary of Natixis Investment Managers, forming Mirova SunFunder to accelerate clean energy and climate investments across emerging markets. The combined entity continues SunFunder's core mission of expanding energy access while adding Mirova's broader climate and sustainability investment capabilities.
