Sonera

Sonera (formerly Sonera Magnetics) is a Berkeley, California-based hardware startup developing chip-scale magnetic sensors that operate at room temperature with sensitivity comparable to the best magnetometers available today. Founded in 2018 by UC Berkeley PhD graduates Dominic Labanowski and Nishita Deka, along with Professor Sayeef Salahuddin, the company spun out of UC Berkeley's Cyclotron Road program to commercialize a scalable solution for neural sensing. Sonera's wearable sensors detect biomagnetic fields generated by neural and muscle activity, enabling non-invasive human-machine interfaces for applications in health monitoring, brain-computer interfaces, and human-technology interaction. The company raised $20 million in 2023 and has received SBIR/STTR funding.
