SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ: SGTL)

SigmaTel, Inc. was an American fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Austin, Texas, that designed system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions, audio codecs, and portable media player integrated circuits. Founded in 1993, SigmaTel became Austin's largest IPO when it listed on NASDAQ in 2003 under the ticker SGTL. The company's STMP35xx SoC powered over 150 million portable media players, including the first-generation Apple iPod Shuffle, and in 2004 SigmaTel chips were found in over 70% of all flash memory-based MP3 devices sold globally. SigmaTel also produced AC'97 and High Definition audio codecs used in Dell laptops, Sony Vaio notebooks, Apple MacBooks, and PC sound cards. In 2006, SigmaTel sold its audio codec product lines to Integrated Device Technology for approximately $72 million. On February 4, 2008, Freescale Semiconductor announced its acquisition of SigmaTel for $110 million, and SigmaTel was subsequently delisted from NASDAQ.
