About
Shazam is a British music and audio recognition application created by Shazam Entertainment Limited, founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee. The app uses audio fingerprinting technology based on time-frequency spectrograms to identify songs from brief microphone samples. Originally launched in 2002 in the UK as an SMS service called 2580, Shazam expanded globally and became one of the most downloaded apps of all time with over one billion downloads across iOS, Android, macOS, watchOS, Wear OS, and Chrome. In September 2018, Apple acquired Shazam for a reported $400 million, integrating its technology into Siri and releasing ShazamKit for third-party developers.
