The company traces its roots to 1984 as Eagle Pacific Insurance. In 2003, venture capital firm Summit Partners led a buyout and rebranded the business as SeaBright Insurance. The company went public in January 2005 on Nasdaq, becoming Washington State's first IPO of that year. SeaBright specialized in multi-jurisdictional workers' compensation coverage for upper-middle-market employers with significant severity exposures, particularly in maritime industries. In August 2012, SeaBright was acquired for approximately $252 million.
