RoBhat Labs was founded in 2017 by UC Berkeley undergraduates Ash Bhat and Rohan Phadte, who built machine-learning tools to fight online misinformation, including BotCheck.me for detecting bot-driven Twitter accounts and SurfSafe, a Chrome and Opera browser extension launched in 2018 that flagged altered or misleadingly reused news images by comparing them against a database of roughly 100 trusted sources.
