RiskMetrics Group was spun out of J.P. Morgan in 1998, building on J.P. Morgan's RiskMetrics methodology for measuring Value-at-Risk, and grew into a leading provider of risk management and corporate governance products and services to the global financial community, headquartered in New York with 20 offices worldwide. The company later acquired Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) to expand into proxy research and corporate governance.
