Reducing peritonitis risk to make home dialysis safer and more accessible
Relavo is a female-founded medical device company dedicated to making home dialysis more accessible by reducing the risk of peritonitis — a life-threatening infection that prevents up to 80% of dialysis patients from receiving care at home. The company's flagship product, PeritoneX, is an in-line connection device that internally disinfects peritoneal dialysis tubes at all connection sites using a vacuum mechanism to flush 0.55% sodium hypochlorite into the connection space. Relavo was founded out of Johns Hopkins University in 2019 by CEO Sarah Lee, CTO Tejasvi Desai, and Chief Innovation Officer Anna Bailey. The company has received support from NSF SBIR ($1M grant), the National Kidney Foundation Innovation Fund, KidneyX, Medtech Innovator, MassChallenge, VentureWell, and additional private investors, raising a total of approximately $1.55M.
