Oxford Ionics

Oxford Ionics is a UK-based quantum computing company founded in 2020 by quantum physicists Dr. Chris Ballance and Dr. Tom Harty at the University of Oxford. The company uses trapped-ion technology combined with Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) — a proprietary approach that integrates qubit control onto standard semiconductor chips — to build high-performance, scalable, and data-centre-ready quantum computers. Oxford Ionics holds world records in all three quantum computing super metrics: single-qubit gate fidelity, two-qubit gate fidelity, and state preparation and measurement. Its customers include enterprise organizations across aerospace, defence, and research sectors such as NASA, Airbus, Nvidia, and Infineon, and in 2025 IonQ announced its intention to acquire the company for approximately $1.1 billion.
