Obsidian is a personal knowledge base app built on five guiding principles: free for everyone ("Yours"), durable open file formats that prevent lock-in ("Durable"), locally-stored and end-to-end encrypted data ("Private"), highly customizable and extensible tooling ("Malleable"), and no outside investors, funded entirely by users ("Independent"). Co-founder and COO Erica Xu started Obsidian in 2020 to build what she calls "the perfect note-taking app," and the small team is led alongside co-founder and CTO Shida Li.
