Nortel Networks Corporation, formerly Northern Telecom Limited, was a Canadian multinational telecommunications and data networking equipment manufacturer headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in Montreal in 1895. At its peak the company accounted for more than a third of the total valuation of all companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and employed 94,500 people worldwide, before filing for bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada in 2009 amid a stock collapse. Nortel sold off its remaining assets over the following years and was formally dissolved in 2013.
