Nion Co. was a Kirkland, Washington-based manufacturer of scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEMs), founded in 1997 by physicists Ondrej Krivanek and Niklas Dellby. Nion was the first company to commercialize aberration-corrected STEM instruments and became the world leader in ultra-high energy and spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The company received multiple SBIR awards from the U.S. Department of Energy for spectrometer improvements, monochromator development, and open-source microscope control software. Nion was acquired by Bruker Corporation in January 2024.
