About
Nicira Networks was a Palo Alto-based software-defined networking (SDN) startup that pioneered network virtualization technology, including proprietary implementations of OpenFlow, Open vSwitch, and OpenStack networking. Co-founded in 2007 by Stanford and UC Berkeley researchers Martin Casado (CTO), Nick McKeown, and Scott Shenker, Nicira's platform allowed enterprises to decouple network control from physical hardware. VMware acquired Nicira in 2012 for $1.26 billion — at the time VMware's largest acquisition — integrating the technology into what became VMware NSX.
