Nicira was a Palo Alto, California-based network virtualization company founded in 2007 as a spinout from research at UC Berkeley and Stanford. The company pioneered software-defined networking (SDN) with its Network Virtualization Platform (NVP), decoupling network logic from physical hardware to create virtual networks in software. VMware acquired Nicira in July 2012 for approximately $1.26 billion — one of the largest acquisitions in VMware's history.
