NeuroTinker, LLC

NeuroTinker, LLC develops NeuroBytes, open-source electronic neuron simulators designed to teach fundamental neuroscience through hands-on, modular learning. Each NeuroBytes board simulates a biological neuron using a microcontroller-based integrate-and-fire algorithm, featuring five dendritic inputs, two axon outputs, and an RGB LED that visually represents the neuron's firing state. Students and educators interconnect multiple boards to construct functioning neural circuits — modeling reflexes, motor control, and sensory processing — in the spirit of LEGO or SnapCircuits but focused on brain science. The platform bridges the gap between middle- and high-school biology and post-secondary neuroscience education, targeting secondary students, STEM educators, hobbyists, and makers. NeuroTinker was founded by Joe Burdo and Zach Fredin and is supported by NSF Phase I and Phase II SBIR grants.
