About

Nellcor was founded in 1981 by Dr. William New Jr., Jack Lloyd, and James Corman to commercialize pulse oximetry technology developed at Stanford University. The company pioneered non-invasive blood oxygen monitoring with products including bedside and handheld pulse oximeters and disposable sensors, becoming a standard of care after the American Society of Anesthesiologists mandated continuous oxygen monitoring in 1986. After going public on Nasdaq in 1987, Nellcor was acquired by Mallinckrodt in 1997, passed to Tyco International in 2000, spun into Covidien in 2007, and ultimately acquired by Medtronic in 2015, where the brand continues.
