MGE Energy, Inc. is a public utility holding company headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, incorporated in 2001 as the parent of Madison Gas and Electric Co. (MGE). Madison Gas and Electric traces its roots to 1896 when the Four Lakes Light and Power Company and the Madison City Gas Light and Coke Co. merged; predecessor operations date to 1855. As a regulated utility, MGE serves approximately 172,000 electric and 154,000 natural gas customers across the Madison metropolitan area and surrounding Wisconsin counties. MGE Energy has pursued an aggressive renewable energy strategy, owning solar, wind, and battery storage assets, and has committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
