Inktomi

Inktomi Corporation was an American internet software company founded in January 1996 by UC Berkeley professor Eric Brewer and graduate student Paul Gauthier, headquartered in Foster City, California. The company developed a high-performance web search engine that powered HotBot and was licensed to major portals including Yahoo!, Microsoft MSN, and Disney, as well as a Traffic Server proxy cache deployed by large ISPs including AOL. At its peak, Inktomi served search results to hundreds of millions of users globally and expanded into content delivery, shopping engines, and streaming media distribution through a series of acquisitions. Following the dot-com bust, the company was acquired by Yahoo! for $241 million in March 2003, and its Traffic Server technology was later donated to the Apache Software Foundation in 2009.
