The company was formed in 2016 through the merger of IHS Inc. — originally founded in 1959 in Denver, Colorado as Information Handling Services — and Markit Ltd., a British financial data company founded in 2003. IHS Markit operated across four segments: Financial Services, Transportation, Resources, and Consolidated Markets and Solutions. In financial services, the company provided credit derivative pricing, fixed income analytics, capital markets software, reference data, and trade processing infrastructure. In energy and resources, it delivered upstream oil and gas research, power market analysis, and commodity price benchmarks. In transportation, it provided vehicle history data (including Carfax), automotive market intelligence, and supply chain analytics. Its economics division produced GDP and macroeconomic forecasting for global markets. The company employed approximately 14,000 professionals across 34 countries and reported revenue of $4.658 billion in 2021, serving more than 50,000 key customers including 80% of the Fortune Global 500. On February 28, 2022, S&P Global completed its acquisition of IHS Markit in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $44 billion, combining two of the world's leading financial data and analytics providers.
