Hotmail was founded in 1996 by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith as one of the world's first free web-based email services. Microsoft acquired it in 1997 and operated it as MSN Hotmail. In 2005 it was rebranded as Windows Live Hotmail, and in 2013 Microsoft migrated all Hotmail users to Outlook.com, effectively retiring the Hotmail brand.
