Genetix Biotherapeutics (formerly bluebird bio) is a commercial-stage biotechnology company delivering genetic therapies for patients with sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, and cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy. Its FDA-approved, one-time administered therapies are based on a patient's own blood stem cells, modified outside the body to add working copies of an affected gene before being returned to restore normal gene function. Headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts, the company traces its roots to 1992, when it was founded as Genetix Pharmaceuticals before rebranding to bluebird bio in 2010 and returning to the Genetix name in 2025.
