Founded in 1998 by Wesley Edens, Rob Kauffman, Randal Nardone, Pete Briger, and Michael Novogratz, Fortress manages approximately $53 billion in assets on behalf of over 2,000 institutional clients and private investors worldwide. The firm invests across corporate credit, real estate, private equity, insurance, and permanent capital strategies. Fortress was the first large private equity firm in the United States to list publicly on the NYSE (2007), was acquired by SoftBank in 2017, and in 2024 became independent again under Mubadala Investment Company and its own management team. The firm employs over 900 professionals globally.
