Founded in late 2017 through a partnership between Warburg Pincus and the Kayne Private Energy Income Funds platform managed by Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, the company pursued a disciplined acquisition and development strategy for unconventional oil and gas resources. Over five years, Ensign grew to operate approximately 130,000 gross acres and over 700 wells across Bee, DeWitt, Karnes, and Live Oak Counties, achieving peak production of approximately 67,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in Q4 2022, making it one of the premier private operators in the Eagle Ford basin. The company created value through strategic bolt-on acquisitions — including a major purchase from Pioneer Natural Resources and a Reliance acquisition that improved working interest by 50% — combined with rigorous operational execution. In November 2022, Ensign announced the sale of its assets to Marathon Oil Corporation for $3.0 billion in cash, representing one of the most significant E&P transactions in the Eagle Ford basin.
