Founded in February 1994 by Joel Ronning, the company went public on Nasdaq (DRIV) in 1998 and grew to process more than $30 billion in online transactions annually by 2013. Digital River provided API-based cross-border commerce, order management, fraud mitigation, tax compliance, and subscription billing services to leading enterprise software and consumer electronics brands worldwide. In late 2014, private equity firm Siris Capital acquired the company for $840 million. On January 28, 2025, Digital River began shutting down due to insolvency, laying off its remaining 122 employees. In May 2025, Digital River filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
