Bitcasa

Bitcasa was an American cloud storage company founded in 2011 that pioneered the concept of infinite, client-side encrypted cloud storage. The company debuted at TechCrunch Disrupt 2011, offering unlimited storage for $10 per month using a convergent encryption algorithm that deduplicated data before upload while keeping files encrypted and private. Bitcasa raised $9 million in 2012 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, and Horizons Ventures. The service provided multi-platform access across Windows, Mac, Android, and web browsers with media streaming, file versioning, and backups. After facing significant business model challenges — including the inability to sustain unlimited storage at low price points — Bitcasa discontinued its consumer cloud storage service in May 2016 and shut down entirely in January 2017. The company was headquartered in Mountain View, California.
