Biobuu

BioBuu is a Tanzania-based sustainable agritech company and social enterprise, founded in 2015 by Kigen Compton. The company uses black soldier flies to bioconvert organic waste from restaurants and households into high-protein animal feed for chickens and fish, as well as organic compost and insect oil. BioBuu's products are sold to farmers across Tanzania and Kenya, helping to improve crop yields and replace more expensive conventional animal feeds, while simultaneously reducing the volume of food waste that ends up in landfill. The company operates two production facilities — one in Tanzania and one in Kenya — and was named the African winner of the agritech category at the Global Startup Awards. In 2023, BioBuu raised $200,000 in seed funding from the GIIG Africa Fund to hire additional talent, expand its product range, and grow insect protein export capabilities. BioBuu's approach addresses the twin challenges of food waste management and sustainable agriculture in Africa, where population growth and food demand are projected to intensify significantly by 2050.
