About
Aurora Biosciences Corporation was a San Diego drug discovery company founded in 1995 by Nobel laureate Roger Y. Tsien along with Charles Zuker, Michael Geoffrey, and venture capitalist Kevin Kinsella, built to commercialize fluorescence-based assay technology derived from Tsien's green fluorescent protein research. The company used proprietary advances in biology, chemistry, and automation to accelerate drug discovery, and its work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation later contributed to the discovery of ivacaftor. Vertex Pharmaceuticals acquired Aurora for about $592 million in stock in 2001.
